Multi-Factor Authentication

As part of our commitment to protect your personal information, we require multi-factor authentication on all AusPassport accounts. Each time you sign into AusPassport, you’ll enter your password and a unique code we send to your mobile or email address to confirm it’s you.

You set up this extra layer of security when you first open an AusPassport account. If you already have an AusPassport account, you’ll be asked to set it up when you next visit AusPassport.  If you don’t want to set up multi-factor authentication on your AusPassport account, you’ll need to use a paper application form.

Setting up multi-factor authentication

New accounts

If you’re creating an AusPassport account for the first time, you’ll set up multi-factor authentication as part of the process.

You’ll nominate an email address to be your AusPassport login email and receive a code to verify it before you choose a password.

We recommend setting up a mobile number and a second email address for multi-factor authentication. You cannot add these afterwards. If you’re overseas, you should add a second email address in case you cannot receive SMS in the country you’re in.

Existing accounts

If you already have an AusPassport account, you’ll need to follow these steps to set up multi‑factor authentication.

  1. The next time you visit AusPassport, select ‘Create an account’.
  2. Use the same email address you use to sign into AusPassport.
    • This will make sure you can see your account information, including any passport applications in progress.
  3. Follow the steps to set up multi-factor authentication.

If you’re overseas, you should add a second email address in case you cannot receive SMS in the country you’re in.
